Silver Stage High School — Silver Springs, NV

Way Cool Student Scientist Report

Jim (teacher): I have a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Lesley College. I have taught 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, and am presently teaching Cisco Networking, robotics, electronics, and computer applications at Silver Stage High School. I spend a lot of time at school, but when I have free time I enjoy camping, hiking, and running ultra-distance races. I have lived my adult life in Arizona, Alaska (8 years) and a number of small towns in Nevada.

I’d like to continue learning and teaching. I plan to spend more time on web design and digital photography. I am very excited about the opportunity to participate in a “real science” activity with NASA and the JPL.

Matt (student): I am 16 years old. I was born in Evanston, Wyoming but have lived the majority of my life in Nevada. I live with my mother, my stepfather, and two sisters. Both of my sisters will be graduating this year from high school. I have always attended school in Lyon County since my kindergarten year.

I enjoy spending time on computers and playing video games, but I also like to be able to get out with friends to play sports, go see a movie, bowl, and other activities. I have always been great at math and like to take a hands-on approach in my work. I don’t like to be doing the same task everyday; instead I want to have work that can change over time and give me something new to do.

I show an interest in this program because I have always loved to get involved with technology and one day hope to design, build, and test new computers and software. This program will allow me to see how fast-paced the world of technology is becoming and what I should expect to come in the near future.

Shannon (student): I’m a sophomore at Silver Stage High School. I was born on May 30, 1987 and I have lived in Nevada for four years. I am a second year cheerleader and I love being part of our school. On the weekend I drive a racecar and enjoy trying new things.
