Melas Chasma is part of the enormous Valles Marineris canyon system that stretches along the equator of Mars. Melas is a broad canyon
that appears to have many layers of material in its walls and basin beds. An analysis of these layers could help scientists determine
whether or not they were deposited in liquid water, and what martian conditions were like when they were deposited.
